REVIEW: Mr.Charlie’s – Venice, California

If you squint really hard, you might see the golden arches… maybe not. However, this might be better for plant-based, vegetarian, or vegan. This can be a controversial review because of the similarities of a popular fast-food franchise (*cough* McDonald’s* cough). When I was waiting for my food, I saw people walking by on the Venice Beach boardwalk visibly upset for some reason when they saw the storefront. I will get into this and of course the review of the food I had here in my review below. Before you continue to read, please don’t forget to support by giving the blog a follow on social media on TikTokInstagram, and Facebook, especially since I will be posting more Los Angeles food and travel content! For a visual preview please see the video below!

Location and about

I know I mentioned how another popular plant-based chain, Monty’s is similar to McDonald’s with their Happy Meals but if you go to Mr.Charlie’s, they package every meal in their version to a box that has the same colors and shape of a Happy Meal, and essentially, an overall parody of the brand. Although the spoofing of the brand is clear and might not be acknowledged by Mr.Charlie’s, the mission is bigger than just burgers and fries. Mr.Charlie’s goal is to encourage people to explore more sustainable options, employ people who need second chances, and overall make a positive global change via a light-hearted, fun approach. Their incredible mission, paired with my genuine interest to try their food made me excited to finally check this out for myself.

I decided to visit their Venice location (1827 Ocean Front Walk, Venice, California) since I had never been to Venice Beach before and you can find some paid parking nearby. The location is right in front of the iconic Muscle Beach and there are designated seating areas for you to enjoy your food. Just be cautious of your surroundings when parking and walking in certain areas. Note: This location might be temporary closed but I believe their other LA, San Francisco, and Sydney (Australia) locations are still open!

Price

There is no denying that it is hard to come across plant-based fast-food options that are on the low end of pricing, and unfortunately, the pricing might be my biggest drawback of Mr.Charlie’s. We got two items from the menu, a Frowny Meal (Not a Chicken Sandwich with a bottled Sprite, four nuggets, and sweet and sour sauce) for $17.99 and a Big Chuck for $10.99. Therefore, in total after taxes, it did come up to $31.73 which is pricey for a combo and burger. However, given what Mr. Charlie’s mission and values are, I am not upset that I paid this much.

Taste

The part you are most likely intrigued by is how it tasted. Frankly, I didn’t mind the items I tried but there were some things I liked and some things I would suggest improving. Firstly, I think the Big Chuck tasted just like a Big Mac (a bit similar to the nomoo burger) with the texture and consistency of sauces and cheese. The Nuggets were solid as well tasted like the Impossible nuggets I have had before and the fries were certainly addicting. Despite loving the packaging that featured a cheeky sticker, the not a chicken sandwich was a little too bland. Overall, when it comes to taste, I did like the Big Chuck and fries, and didn’t mind the nuggets. However, I think the taste of the food itself doesn’t really distinguish itself in comparison to other plant-based options.

Overall

I’m happy that I finally got the chance to visit this place because it was on my list for a while. I know that the prices and even the taste of some of their items can be detering, but I do love what they are advocating for. It’s clear that they are trying to do somethign funny with this spoof but more importantly, they are trying to create a positive change in the world with respect to our environment and society. Overall, I am happy I tried this spot once but I think the next time I try Mr. Charlie’s will be if there is a new menu item or special collaboration that entices me. I will say that is worth checking out at least once. Let me now your thoughts if you have had Mr. Charlie’s or curious to try in the comments below or on social media.
