Today, April 10th marks the international day of pink. As mentioned on the official website, “It is a day where communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, and all forms of bullying”.
This day has always been important to me since I was informed about it in high school. After hearing the story about a boy being bullied over a shirt, it doesn’t surprise me but definitely disappoints me. I say that because as I talked about it in the masculinity podcast episode pink is just a colour, sometimes you just need the confidence to wear it and if you have a problem with that, that’s for you alone to discuss. I like wearing pink because I do like the colour, but at first, I did wear it because I know it would challenge skeptics and perception of others. Hopefully, that inspired others to have the confidence to wear it as well.
As someone who was bullied this day means a lot because it’s a day to recognize that it is not ok to bully or get bullied. It is ok to be yourself for who you really are and express your true self, as long as you are not hurting anyone in the process. I often thought of doing an outfit for this day and I almost didn’t do it this year but hey better late than never.
This jacket was one of two key pieces for this outfit for this specific day because of the colour and because of what it means to me. Firstly, Bret “The Hitman” Hart is one my favourite wrestlers of all time, the GOAT in my opinion. I love how authentic he is and how awesome he was in person. I was fortunate to meet him a couple years ago, which is why I also knew when he was not physically well but still a champion making sure he was respectful to everyone. Therefore, he definitely did not deserve that stupid attack when he was being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame for his legendary tag team, The Hart Foundation. Also, the company that produces this jacket is also an iconic company that produces nostalgic and quality products. For the jacket, it’s great and I would recommend going up a size to your regular fit. Sign up for emails to be notified when they will next have a 30% off sale!

So these shoes have been in my collection for a while now, I would say for approximately 5 years now. These kicks have gone through winters and have been my go-to ball shoe for some time. Therefore, durability is no question. I remember getting these shoes because I was only a few years into the sneaker game but still so new.
I really wanted a pink shoe because I do like the colour but I also like to challenge the notion that men shouldn’t wear pink. However, what made these an auto cop was the fact this is was a Kay Yow edition. If you don’t know who that is, Kay Yow was a legendary basketball coach who unfortunately died because of Breast Cancer. Nike has since launched an annual pack of shoes that honour her name and raise funds for her organization that helps with breast cancer research and aid. You can notice the logo on the side of the shoe, if it looks similar it may be because the upside down pink ribbon/”Y” is also featured on KD’s annual “Aunt Pearl” shoes, which can be seen on my KD 10. What I remember about these shoes is also trying them on in a store because for some reason the size that fit me best was not my true to size… but a size 13!? Yes, that was weird. Therefore, try to research or if you can try on LeBron’s in store!
Place of Purchase: Footlocker Canada (In-Store)
Price: I am not sure how much it was because it was years ago, but I believe it was around $190 CAD.
Similar to the shoes, I got the pink hat because I knew it would be different, plus it really pops. I will admit, I haven’t worn these in a while, but it’s still a solid fitted. I do like the vibrance, but I also really love the Toronto Blue Jays logo on this New Era 59 Fifty.
Place of Purchase: Lids (In-Store)
Price: This was also purchased a couple years ago, I think either 7 or 8 years ago but I believe it was around $39.99 CAD.
Although I do not have any pink socks, I wanted to go a more vintage style sock to go with the Chalk-Line jacket which is why I went with these 80s rock style sock.
