Top 5 Things On Netflix You May Have Missed But Need to Watch

As the long weekend approaches, some of us may check some places out and some of us will just be having a little “staycation”. That staycation may or may not include sleeping and Netflix, so I thought it would be best to compile a short list of the best things I’ve seen on Netflix that you may have missed.

5. Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King

I absolutely loved this special from beginning to end, it is definitely one of my favourite comedy specials of all-time. I have seen Hasan’s comedic chops on the Daily Show and other videos, but I gained a new found respect for him after seeing this special. It was filmed in his hometown and featured laugh out loud jokes to very deep and sad moments. Hasan beautifully pulls everything together as he tells his story and it’s a must watch for anyone who loves a good story or just loves comedy. Because watch out, Hasan Minhaj is going to be in the comedy game for a long time.

Here’s a little clip from the special:

Genre: Comedy, Comedy Special

Duration: 1 hour 12 min

Starring: Hasan Minhaj

4. The Carter Effect

The Toronto Raptors post-season is officially over. Trust me, it makes frown just writing that sentence. Nevertheless, if you still want to watching something to feel good about the Raps, then go down memory lane since The Carter Effect is finally on Netflix!

For those of you who are not aware of what The Carter Effect is, it’s a documentary focusing on the impact Toronto Raptors legend Vince Carter had on Toronto and Canada, on and off the court. The documentary is produced by UNINTERRUPED (Lebron James’ company) and is directed by Canadian, Sean Menard. Everyone involved did a great job especially Sean as the documentary was only an hour but covered so many different aspects and featured numerous individuals sharing their point of view of Vince Carter’s effect. It was really well done and once again, you don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy it. If you love a good story and want to learn some fun facts, watch this documentary.

Take a look at the video recap and exclusive interviews from the TIFF premiere below.

Genre: Documentary, Sports Documentary

Duration: 1 hour

Starring: Vince Carter, Drake, Director X, so much more!

3. American Vandal

If I told you exactly what the premise of the show is, you may look at me sideways. All I can say is that this is a series that made me addicted and excited to see what the next episode will entail.

It is mockumentary (produced by Funny or Die) and it parodies crime solving documentaries. However, the production and writing was so well done. The humour, seriousness, animation and camera shots really gets the audience engaged with the story. It is also awesome to see new actors emerge from this series.  I hope it is not an all-new cast for season two, but we will see. Watch the trailer below to see what I am talking about.

Genre: Comedy, Mockumumentary

Duration: Approximately 30 minutes per episode

# of Seasons: 1 for now, 2nd season has been teased.

Starring: Genevieve “G” Hannelius, Tyler Alvarez, Griffin Gluck, Jimmy Tatro, Calum Worthy

2. The Get Down

Clearly the theme here with all these selections is that each one of them tell a great story. This pick is no different, and in fact is loosely based on the true story of how Hip-Hop was originated. It does use real facts about the music industry at the time but revolves around fictitious characters. See the trailer below. I loved this show so much that I got a little something special from it (stay tuned for a future post).

I loved this series because of the story telling, direction, original music and the emotional impact. There is no one better to tell the poetic story of hip-hop than the legendary MC, Nas. The show was created by Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis, but was not continued due to the ridiculous amount spent for producing the show (most expensive show in Netflix history: $120 million to produce). Regardless, this is a must watch for lovers of music, drama and just good television.

Genre: Drama, Music

Duration: Approximately an hour per episode

# of Seasons: 1 season/ 2 parts

Starring: Justice Smith, Jaden Smith, Jimmy Smits, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II & more

1. On My Block

My number one pick has to be one Netflix newest’s series, On My Block. This show is hilarious but also has an authenticity to it. There are different characters that make the delivery of this show the way it is and throughout the season you get to see various moments of character development. I am also happy that the writers didn’t sellout and avoided any stereotypical depiction of teenagers in the hood. They are regular, hilarious teens that all have different things to go through.

Despite how hilarious the scenes may be, the show also can get really dark. This is a show you can definitely binge watch, and then binge watch again! See the trailer below to get a little feel before you indulge.

Genre: TV Dramadies, Comedy, Drama

Duration: Approximately 30 minutes per episode

# of Seasons: 1 for now, season 2 is on it’s way!

Starring: Paula Garces, Diego Tinoco, Jason Genao & more

Let me know what you decided to watch, and what you think! Stay tuned for a part two.
